| The Santa Monica City Council is made up of seven members elected at-large for staggered four-year terms. Every two years, after each election, the City Council selects one of its members to serve as Mayor and another to serve as Mayor Pro Tem.

City Mourns Mayor Ken Genser
A public memorial was held on January 24, 2010 for Mayor Ken Genser, who passed away on January 9. Mayor Genser is remembered as a brilliant and tenacious public servant who served the city for more than 25 years.
